Hugo de Garis is an Australian retired researcher in the artificial intelligence subfield of evolvable hardware. During the 1990s and 2000s he used genetic algorithms to evolve artificial neural networks through three dimensional cellular automata implemented in field programmable gate arrays, and he became known for writing about a predicted future conflict between supporters and opponents of intelligent machines, warning of the possibility that an artificial superintelligence could eliminate humanity.
