Modeling and Simulation

This group gathers pioneers of computing methodologies whose primary contribution was building computational models of systems too complex, costly or physically inaccessible to study directly by running them forward in simulated time, including artificial life and cellular automata that model biological or physical processes from simple local rules, and digital physics, the idea that the physical universe itself can be modeled as a computation. It follows the Modeling and simulation second level heading of the ACM Computing Classification System under Computing methodologies. Their shared work is a model run forward to observe emergent behavior, as distinct from a model trained on data to make a prediction, which belongs to the Machine Learning group above.
