Christopher D. Manning

Christopher David Manning (born September 18, 1965) is an Australian-American computer scientist and applied linguist who holds the Thomas M. Siebel Professorship in Machine Learning at Stanford University, with appointments in computer science and linguistics. His research in natural language processing includes co-developing the GloVe word vector model and contributing to the attention mechanisms that underlie modern transformer neural networks. He earned his PhD from Stanford under Joan Bresnan in 1994 and directed the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 2018 to 2025. He co-authored the textbooks Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing and Introduction to Information Retrieval, and received the IEEE John von Neumann Medal in 2024.
