Marc Raibert (born December 22, 1949) is an American roboticist known for pioneering work on dynamically balanced legged robots. He built the Leg Laboratory, established at MIT and later moved to Carnegie Mellon University in 1980, where he studied the control of hopping and running machines, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2008 for his biomechanically motivated analysis, synthesis, control and application of multi legged robots. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in 1973 and a PhD from MIT in 1977, and went on to found Boston Dynamics, serving as its chief executive and later chairman, where the company developed robots including BigDog, Atlas, Spot and Handle before being acquired successively by Google in 2013, SoftBank in 2017 and Hyundai Motor Group in 2020. He now serves as executive director of the Boston Dynamics AI Institute.
