Joseph A. Konstan

Joseph A. Konstan is an American computer scientist who is Distinguished McKnight University Professor and Distinguished University Teaching Professor at the University of Minnesota, working in human-computer interaction, social computing, collaborative information filtering, online communities, and health applications of internet technology. He is best known for his work in collaborative filtering recommenders through the GroupLens project, and for his work in online HIV prevention. He earned an A.B. from Harvard in 1987 and an M.S. and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1990 and 1993, with doctoral research on event-based architecture for graphical user interface toolkits under advisor Lawrence A. Rowe. His honors include ACM Fellow in 2008, IEEE Fellow in 2013, the SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award in 2013, and a Lifetime Research Award in 2026.
