Also Known As J. C. R.; Lick
Human-Centered Computing

Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider, known as J. C. R. or Lick, was an American psychologist and computer scientist considered among the most prominent figures in the development of computer science and computing history. He was one of the first to foresee modern style interactive computing and its application to a wide range of activities, and is remembered as an Internet pioneer whose early vision of a worldwide computer network preceded its construction; his funding of research led to significant advances including the canonical graphical user interface and the ARPANET, the direct predecessor of the Internet. Xerox PARC Computer Science Laboratory founder Robert Taylor said that most of the significant advances in computer technology, including his own group's work at Xerox PARC, were extrapolations of Licklider's vision rather than new visions of their own.

FAQs

How did J. C. R. Licklider's time at ARPA lead to the ARPANET?

He directed the new Information Processing Techniques Office from 1962 and his network vision led to the ARPANET.

In October 1962 Licklider was hired as Director of the Information Processing Techniques Office, which DARPA had newly established. His mandate was to find a way to realize his networking vision and interconnect the main computers of the Department of Defense. He wrote a series of memos describing the benefits of a global, distributed network, some of them addressed to Members and Affiliates of the Intergalactic Computer Network. He left the office in 1964, but his vision of a universal network influenced his successors there and provided the original intellectual push that led to the ARPANET about seven years later.
