Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider, known as J. C. R. or Lick, was an American psychologist and computer scientist considered among the most prominent figures in the development of computer science and computing history. He was one of the first to foresee modern style interactive computing and its application to a wide range of activities, and is remembered as an Internet pioneer whose early vision of a worldwide computer network preceded its construction; his funding of research led to significant advances including the canonical graphical user interface and the ARPANET, the direct predecessor of the Internet. Xerox PARC Computer Science Laboratory founder Robert Taylor said that most of the significant advances in computer technology, including his own group's work at Xerox PARC, were extrapolations of Licklider's vision rather than new visions of their own.
