Jeff Hawkins

Jeff Hawkins is an American computer scientist, neuroscientist and engineer, born June 1, 1957, in Huntington, New York, recognized for creating the hand-held computing paradigm. He co-founded Palm Computing and created the PalmPilot, and later co-founded Handspring with Palm colleagues Donna Dubinsky and Ed Colligan. In 2002 he founded the Redwood Neuroscience Institute, and in 2005 he co-founded Numenta to pursue brain-inspired artificial intelligence. Hawkins earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1979, and later studied biophysics at UC Berkeley, where he patented a pattern classifier for handwritten text. He wrote the books On Intelligence (2004) and A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence (2021).
