Antonio Luz Furtado

Antonio Luz Furtado (born August 24, 1934) is a Brazilian computer scientist and professor emeritus in the Department of Informatics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, known for his contributions to databases, conceptual modeling, computing methodology and logic programming. He earned his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1974, receiving its Norman Stuart Robertson Fellowship in 1973, and helped establish one of the world's first computer science departments at PUC-Rio in 1968, later also working as a researcher at an IBM research center and teaching at the Instituto Militar de Engenharia. Between 1969 and 2011 he published 193 items, including 47 journal articles, and his work on the entity-relationship model was recognized with the 2014 Peter P. Chen Award and, in 2006, with the rank of Commander of Brazil's Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico.
