Hanan Samet is an American computer scientist and Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, who earned his PhD from Stanford University in 1975. He is recognized as a pioneer of quadtrees and other multidimensional spatial data structures used to organize spatial information, work that has influenced applications such as Google Earth. He received the Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award in 2012, was named a Distinguished University Professor at Maryland in 2013, and is a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the International Association for Pattern Recognition.
