Vladimir Arlazarov is a Russian computer scientist born in Moscow. In 1965 he co-developed the ITEP chess program with colleagues at Moscow's Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics; the program's lineage led to Kaissa, winner of the first World Computer Chess Championship in Stockholm in 1974. He is also credited as one of the inventors of the Method of Four Russians, a technique for fast Boolean matrix multiplication. Since 1977 he has led the System Programming Department at the Institute of System Analysis, where he directed development of the INES database management system.
