James Goodnight

Information Systems

James Goodnight, usually called Jim, is an American software developer and businessman who has led SAS Institute as chief executive since 1976. Born in 1943 in Salisbury, North Carolina, he studied at North Carolina State University and earned a doctorate in statistics there, serving on the faculty from 1972 to 1976. At the university he and Anthony James Barr led a research project funded mainly by the United States Department of Agriculture to build a general purpose statistical analysis system for agricultural data, the original meaning of the name SAS. In 1976, with John Sall, Barr and Jane Helwig, he left the university to found SAS Institute, which moved to Cary, North Carolina, in 1980. The company grew into a large maker of analytics software, and he was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 1981.
