Gerard Salton

Also Known As Gerhard Anton Sahlmann
Information Systems

Gerard A. Salton, known as Gerry, born March 8, 1927 and died August 28, 1995, was a professor of computer science at Cornell University. Salton was perhaps the leading computer scientist working in the field of information retrieval during his time, called the father of Information Retrieval; his group at Cornell developed the SMART Information Retrieval System, which he had initiated while at Harvard, the first system to use the now popular vector space model for information retrieval.

FAQs

What did Gerard Salton's SMART system contribute to information retrieval?

It introduced the vector space model, term weighting and relevance feedback.

The SMART information retrieval system was Gerard Salton's main research tool at Cornell University. A 1995 Cornell press release, reported by the Computing Research Association, says that well-known retrieval concepts introduced as a result of SMART include the vector space model, statistical term weighting schemes and the relevance feedback technique for query optimization.
