Fernando Boavida

Fernando Boavida (born June 5, 1959, in Pinhal Novo, Portugal) is a Portuguese computer scientist and full professor in the Department of Informatics Engineering at the University of Coimbra, recognized as a pioneer of computer network research and internet development in Portugal. After a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Coimbra in 1982, a master's in telecommunications in 1986 and a PhD in informatics engineering in 1990, he was involved in designing the ENER 1000, Portugal's first personal computer, and in 1994 co-founded the university's Department of Informatics Engineering, where in 1991 he had founded the Laboratory of Communications and Telematics. His research on computer networks, telematics and the Internet of Things produced more than 170 international publications and four widely used Portuguese-language textbooks that have sold more than 25,000 copies since 2000, and he co-founded the ACM CoNEXT conference series.
