Gerald Combs is an American computer scientist and a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City who created the network protocol analyzer Ethereal in 1997 while working at the internet service provider Network Integration Services, releasing its first version in July 1998. Renamed Wireshark in 2006 after Combs moved to CACE Technologies, the tool became the most widely used software for visually analyzing network protocol traffic, and Combs has continued to lead its development and open source community for more than two decades. He later joined Sysdig, which became a primary sponsor of the Wireshark project.
