Jan Wieck is a long-standing contributor to the PostgreSQL database project, listed on the project's contributor profiles page as located in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, USA. That page credits him with designing and implementing Slony, overhauling the query rewrite rule system, and writing the procedural languages PL/pgSQL and PL/Tcl, and with adding foreign keys, the background writer, the statistics collector, the TOAST system and other features. The Programming Language Database credits him as the creator of PL/pgSQL in 1998, and PL/pgSQL first appeared with PostgreSQL 6.4, released on October 30, 1998.
