George Logemann

Theory of Computation

George Wahl Logemann was an American mathematician and computer scientist, born in Milwaukee on 31 January 1938 and died in Hartford on 5 June 2012. He became well known as one of the authors of the Davis-Putnam-Logemann-Loveland algorithm, the backtracking procedure used to solve Boolean satisfiability problems, whose middle initial in the abbreviation DPLL is his own. Beyond that work in logic and computation, he also contributed to the field of computer music, a sign that his interests in computing reached into the arts as well as into the theory of automated reasoning that his best-known algorithm served.
