Jeff R. Cash

Theory of Computation

Jeff R. Cash was a British numerical analyst, long associated with Imperial College London, whose research centred on the numerical solution of difference and differential equations with an emphasis on mathematical software. He took his mathematics degree at Imperial College in 1969 and then studied for a PhD on the numerical solution of differential equations under the guidance of Dr. J. C. P. Miller. After the doctorate he returned to the Imperial College Mathematics Department as a member of staff, was promoted to reader and later to Professor in Numerical Analysis, and finished his career there as Emeritus Professor. With Alan H. Karp of the IBM Scientific Center he proposed the Cash-Karp method, an embedded Runge-Kutta scheme that gives fourth- and fifth-order solutions for ordinary differential equations and a built-in error estimate for adaptive step sizes. A colleague announced his death on 19 June 2020 on the NA Digest mailing list.
