Theory of Computation

Lenore Blum is an American computer scientist and mathematician, formerly a distinguished career professor at Carnegie Mellon University and now a professor in residence at the University of California, Berkeley. With Manuel Blum and Michael Shub she co-developed the Blum Blum Shub generator, a cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator based on squaring numbers modulo the product of two large primes, and with Shub and Stephen Smale she developed the Blum Shub Smale machine, a theoretical model of computation over the real numbers that showed concepts such as undecidability apply there too. She also founded the Women at SCS program at Carnegie Mellon, which helped raise the share of women among the schools computer science undergraduates to nearly half.
