John Preskill

John Phillip Preskill (born January 19, 1953, in Highland Park, Illinois) is an American theoretical physicist known for coining the terms 'quantum supremacy' and 'noisy intermediate scale quantum,' or NISQ, to describe near term quantum computing devices. He holds the Richard P. Feynman Professorship of Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology, which he joined as an associate professor in 1983 and where he became a full professor in 1990, and he directs Caltech's Institute for Quantum Information and Matter. His research addresses the mathematical foundations of quantum information science and quantum computation, and he has contributed to the Gottesman Kitaev Preskill quantum error correcting code and the Hayden Preskill thought experiment on black hole information.
