Peter Zoller (born 1952) is an Austrian theoretical physicist and emeritus professor at the University of Innsbruck, known for pioneering contributions to quantum computing, quantum simulation, and quantum communication. With Ignacio Cirac, he developed in 1995 the theoretical framework for a quantum computer built from cold trapped ions, described as the first experimentally realistic and comprehensive proposal for a universal quantum computer. He also advanced the use of ultracold atoms in optical lattices for quantum simulation and introduced the concept of quantum repeaters for extending quantum communication over long distances.
