Umesh Vazirani is an Indian-American computer scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, and one of the founders of quantum computational complexity theory. With Ethan Bernstein he formally defined the quantum Turing machine in the early 1990s, work that helped establish the theoretical foundations later used to analyze what quantum computers can and cannot do efficiently.
