Jack Bonnell Dennis (October 13, 1931, to March 14, 2026) was an American computer scientist and academic who was Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His work on computer systems and computer languages is recognized to have played a key role in hacker culture, sponsoring easier access to computer facilities at MIT during the early development of the subculture; much of what would later become Unix came from his early collaboration with Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson. He was also a member of the Tech Model Railroad Club, which incubated much of the early slang and traditions of hacking.

What did Jack Dennis contribute to Multics?
He helped specify the segment addressing and paging mechanisms of the General Electric Model 645.
Jack Dennis collaborated with the teams behind Project MAC and Multics, early attempts to let several users share one computer through a time-shared operating system. He helped specify the segment addressing and paging mechanisms that became a fundamental part of the General Electric Model 645 computer. MIT credits that Multics work as the reason he was elected a fellow of the IEEE.
Why is Jack Dennis associated with dataflow computing?
He led MIT's Computation Structures Group and pioneered dataflow models of computation.
Jack Dennis was the original leader of the Computation Structures Group within the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. There he pioneered the development of dataflow models of computation and, subsequently, many novel principles of computer architecture inspired by those models. He explained that he focused the group on architectural concepts that could narrow the gap between programming concepts and the organization of computer hardware.
