Computer Systems Organization

Andrew D. Birrell (1951 - December 7, 2016) was a Scottish-born computer scientist who earned his doctorate at Trinity College, Cambridge, under Roger Needham before joining Xerox PARC in 1978, where he and Bruce Jay Nelson developed the remote procedure call mechanism for distributed computing, described in their landmark 1984 paper Implementing Remote Procedure Calls. He later spent seventeen years at Digital Equipment Corporation's Systems Research Center and then joined Microsoft Research Silicon Valley in 2001, working on distributed systems including the Grapevine system and on programming with threads, until the lab closed in 2014.
