Bruno Buchberger, born on 22 October 1942, is Professor of Computer Mathematics at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. In his 1965 doctoral thesis he created the theory of Gröbner bases, naming these objects after his advisor Wolfgang Gröbner, and he has developed the theory throughout his career. In 1985 he started the Journal of Symbolic Computation, now the leading publication in computer algebra, and in 1987 he founded and chaired the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation at Johannes Kepler University. He conceived the Softwarepark Hagenberg in 1989 and has directed its growth, and since 1995 he has been active in the Theorema project. Beyond computational algebra he applied Gröbner bases to automated theorem proving, computational geometry and the mathematics of origami. His honours include the Wilhelm Exner Medal in 1995, the Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award in 2007 and the Herbrand Award in 2018.
