Computer Systems Organization

Francis (Frank) Hamilton (1898 to 1972) was an American electrical engineer and calculator designer responsible for the primary organization, design and construction of the Harvard Mark I, IBM's Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator. Working with fellow IBM engineers Clair Lake and Benjamin Durfee under Harvard researcher Howard Aiken, he helped engineer the circuits that unified the machine's 78 linked components and computed functions such as logarithms and trigonometric calculations. He later designed IBM's Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator in 1948 and the IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Calculator in 1953, and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
