Frank Gray

Frank Gray (13 September 1887 - 23 May 1969) was an American physicist and researcher at Bell Labs known for developing the Gray code, also called reflected binary code, described in his 1953 patent as a binary numeral system used in electronics with applications across mathematics. He also contributed to early television technology, proposing a flying spot scanner concept in 1927 and helping build a two way mechanically scanned television system in 1930, and co-authored a foundational 1934 paper on raster scan mathematics with Pierre Mertz. He later worked on pulse code modulation technology at Bell Labs. Gray earned his physics degree from Purdue University in 1911.
