Hidetoshi Nishimori

Theory of Computation

Hidetoshi Nishimori is a researcher who, with Tadashi Kadowaki, wrote the 1998 paper Quantum Annealing in the Transverse Ising Model, submitted to the arXiv condensed matter archive on 25 April 1998 under statistical mechanics. The paper introduced quantum fluctuations into the simulated annealing process for optimization problems, aiming at faster convergence to the optimal state, with quantum fluctuations causing transitions between states and playing the role that thermal fluctuations play in the conventional approach. The idea was tested on the transverse Ising model. The English Wikipedia article on quantum annealing credits Kadowaki and Nishimori with formulating the method in its present form in 1998. The cited records give no further biographical details.
