Homer Ray Oldfield Jr., also known as Barney Oldfield (August 28, 1916 - June 22, 2000), was an American computer professional best known for his work at General Electric in the 1940s and 50s. After MIT degrees in aeronautical engineering and instrumentation, he joined GE in 1945, directed its Microwave Laboratory at Stanford, and participated in development of the ERMA banking computer system there. In 1956 he became general manager of the GE Computer Department in Phoenix, where he secured Bank of America as a customer for the ERMA system before being fired in 1958 for overstepping his bounds; he received the Computer Pioneer Award from the IEEE in 1997 for the ERMA work and for introducing computer manufacturing to GE.
