Jacob Ziv

Theory of Computation

Jacob Ziv was an Israeli electrical engineer and information theorist, born on 27 November 1931 and died on 25 March 2023, who developed the LZ family of lossless data compression algorithms alongside Abraham Lempel. He is also a namesake of the Ziv-Zakai bound in estimation theory, which he formulated with Moshe Zakai. The LZ78 algorithm that he and Lempel published in 1978 became the starting point for the Lempel-Ziv-Welch algorithm of 1984.
