Alfonso John Romero is an American and Irish video game developer who co-founded id Software and designed its early games, including Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Doom II, Hexen and Quake. His designs and development tools, together with programming techniques developed by fellow id programmer John Carmack, popularized the first-person shooter genre, and Romero is credited with coining the multiplayer term deathmatch. After leaving id Software in 1996 he co-founded Ion Storm, directing the first-person shooter Daikatana, and went on to found the studios Monkeystone Games and Gazillion Entertainment.
