Lee Felsenstein

Lee Felsenstein is an American computer engineer, born April 27, 1945, in Philadelphia, who designed the Osborne 1, the first mass-produced portable computer. He also designed the Intel 8080-based Sol-20 computer, created the Pennywhistle modem, and developed the VDM-1 video display module, which became a standard architecture for personal computer displays. Felsenstein co-founded the Community Memory project, an early effort to place networked computer terminals in public spaces before the commercial internet, and was an original member of the Homebrew Computer Club formed in 1975. He earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972, worked at Osborne Computer Corporation from 1981 to 1983, and later worked at Interval Research Corporation from 1992 to 2000.
