Lloyd Shapley was an American mathematician and economist who is generally counted among the most important contributors to game theory. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1923, he studied mathematics at Harvard, worked at the RAND Corporation, and took his doctorate at Princeton in 1953. He later taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. His name is attached to many results, including the Shapley value, stochastic games, the Shapley-Shubik power index and the Gale-Shapley algorithm for the stable marriage problem. With Alvin E. Roth he received the 2012 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for the theory of stable allocations and the practice of market design. He died in Tucson, Arizona, in 2016.
