Nicholas Constantine Metropolis (June 11, 1915 - October 17, 1999) was a Greek-American physicist who received his BSc in 1937 and PhD in physics in 1941 at the University of Chicago. He arrived at Los Alamos National Laboratory in April 1943, returned in 1948 to lead the Theoretical Division group that designed and built the MANIAC I computer in 1952, modeled on the IAS machine, and the MANIAC II in 1957.

Nicholas Metropolis led the 1953 paper introducing the Monte Carlo method later generalized by W. K. Hastings into the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm.
