Paul Resnick

Paul Resnick is an American computer scientist who is the Michael D. Cohen Collegiate Professor of Information at the School of Information at the University of Michigan, specializing in recommender systems, reputation systems, online communities, and human-computer interaction. He is best known for developing GroupLens, a collaborative filtering recommender system that demonstrated how distributed users could personalize recommendations through ratings, work for which he received the 2010 ACM Software System Award. He earned his PhD in computer science from MIT in 1992 after undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. His honors include election to the CHI Academy in 2017, the ACM Special Interest Group on Electronic Commerce Test of Time Award for The Social Cost of Cheap Pseudonyms, the 2016 University of Michigan Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, and ACM Fellow in 2020 for contributions to recommender systems and online communities.
