Steven Mayer is an American engineer, born in 1944, recognized for pioneering contributions to the video game and personal computing industries. He co-founded Cyan Engineering with Larry Emmons, acquired by Atari in 1973 to become its Grass Valley research and development center, and working with Ron Milner he co-invented the Atari VCS (Video Computer System) and built its working prototype, overseeing development of the Atari 2600. He also led development of Atari's 8-bit personal computers, the Atari 400 and 800, and championed games including Gauntlet and Paperboy. Mayer left Atari in the late 1980s as the company faced financial difficulties.
