McWilliams is an American computer scientist who earned his PhD in computer science from Stanford University in 1980 with a dissertation on verification of timing constraints in large digital systems, work that won the Fannie and John Hertz award for best PhD thesis that year. With Lawrence Curtis Widdoes Jr. he developed SCALD, a structured computer-aided logic design methodology, for which the two shared the IEEE Computer Society W. Wallace McDowell Award in 1984. McWilliams co-founded Valid Logic Systems in 1981, and from 1996 to 2001 was a Distinguished Engineer and Principal Investigator at Sun Microsystems working on server architecture and CAD tools.
