Tom Lord is a programmer credited with starting GNU Guile. According to the Wikipedia history of Guile, Lord began work on an embeddable language runtime called the GNU Extension Language, or GEL, which was based on Aubrey Jaffer's Scheme implementation SCM. He persuaded Richard Stallman to make GEL the official extension language of the GNU project, arguing that Scheme was a cleaner Lisp dialect than Emacs Lisp and that GEL could grow to implement other languages, such as Emacs Lisp, on the same runtime. When GEL turned out to share its name with another programming language, Lord asked for suggestions on Usenet newsgroups and chose the name Guile, controversially, from a suggestion by Lee Thomas. The Programming Language Database lists him with Aubrey Jaffer and Miles Bader as a creator of Guile.
