Walter John Savitch (1943-2021) was best known for defining the complexity class NL and for Savitch's theorem, which defines a relationship between the NSPACE and DSPACE complexity classes. He also did extensive work in natural language processing and mathematical linguistics, and studied computational complexity as applied to genetics and biology for over ten years. He earned his PhD in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969 under Stephen Cook, and was afterward a professor at the University of California, San Diego in the computer science department.
