The Address programming language is one of the world's first high-level programming languages, created in 1955 by Kateryna Yushchenko in the Soviet Union. It introduced indirect addressing and addresses of the highest rank, a mechanism analogous to what later languages would call pointers, letting a program reference the address of an address rather than only a fixed data location. Unlike its contemporaries Fortran and ALGOL 60, the Address programming language supported this indirect and higher-rank addressing directly, an innovation credited with anticipating ideas that would later appear across object-oriented, functional, logic and database programming, as well as artificial intelligence. Yushchenko's work is recognized as a foundational contribution to Soviet and Ukrainian computer science.
