Computing Methodologies

Aleksandr Semyonovich Kronrod was a Soviet mathematician and computer scientist, born in Moscow in 1921. He is known in mathematics for the Gauss-Kronrod quadrature formula, published in 1964, and in computing he led a Soviet program in artificial intelligence and computer chess at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, mentoring researchers including Georgy Adelson-Velsky and Vladimir Arlazarov. He also worked on early Soviet computational economics, including price-formation calculations, and spent his later career developing medical treatments for cancer patients. He died in Moscow in 1986.

FAQs

What part did Aleksandr Kronrod play in early Soviet computer chess?

He led the team behind a Soviet chess program, built by his colleagues, that beat Stanford's program 3 to 1.

Kronrod is believed to be one of the first scientists to work in artificial intelligence. MacTutor reports that he created a team of mathematicians and physicists to develop it. The team first tried a program for the Russian card game Durak, then turned to chess. The chess program was developed by Adelson-Velsky, Arlazarov, Bitman and Uskov, and Kronrod helped whenever the team struggled with recursion issues. In a match with the Stanford team led by John McCarthy, his team's program won by a score of 3 to 1.
