Aleksandr Kronrod

Aleksandr Semyonovich Kronrod was a Soviet mathematician and computer scientist, born in Moscow in 1921. He is known in mathematics for the Gauss-Kronrod quadrature formula, published in 1964, and in computing he led a Soviet program in artificial intelligence and computer chess at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, mentoring researchers including Georgy Adelson-Velsky and Vladimir Arlazarov. He also worked on early Soviet computational economics, including price-formation calculations, and spent his later career developing medical treatments for cancer patients. He died in Moscow in 1986.
