Computer Systems Organization

Andre Truong Trong Thi (30 January 1936 - 29 April 2005) was a Vietnamese-French computer engineer sometimes called a father of the personal computer, who co-created the Micral N microcomputer in 1973 with French engineer Francois Gernelle. Built around an Intel 8008 processor, the Micral N is considered one of the world's first commercial microcomputers, predating the MITS Altair by about two years. Truong was born in Cholon, Saigon, in French Indochina and died in Paris.

FAQs

Was the Micral that Andre Truong Trong Thi helped design really a personal computer?

The Micral was designed for process control; only a few were sold as personal computers, and most ran real-time jobs such as tollbooths.

Not in the way the phrase is usually meant today. The Computer History Museum records that Truong and Francois Gernelle designed the Micral for process control. It was a fully assembled computer built around the Intel 8008 microprocessor and introduced in 1973. A few were sold as personal computers, but most were used in real-time applications such as tollbooths. So the title of father of the personal computer rests on how personal computer is defined, and the machine itself was first an industrial controller.

Verified en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micral: "R2E founder Andre Truong Trong Thi ... asked Francois Gernelle to develop the Micral N computer." No Micral N system entity exists yet in this atlas; left in the gap record for a mint wave rather than minted here.
