Blitz BASIC refers to the programming language dialect that was interpreted by the first Blitz compilers, devised by the New Zealand based developer Mark Sibly. Because it derives from BASIC, its syntax was designed to be easy for beginners who are first learning to program. The dialect is oriented toward writing games, although it is general purpose enough to be used for most kinds of application. The Programming Language Database dates it to 2000, records its early development at Blitz Research, counts hundreds of public repositories that use it on GitHub, and notes that GitHub and Pygments both support syntax highlighting for it. It sits in the family of BASIC dialects alongside languages such as PureBasic and the later Monkey language.
