RPG, whose name stands for Report Program Generator, is a high-level programming language for business applications that IBM introduced in 1959 for the IBM 1401 computer. It was originally designed to generate reports from data files, a purpose reflected in its name, and FOLDOC credits Wilf Hey with the IBM work that produced it. RPG went on to become the primary programming language of IBM's midrange computer product line, including the systems that became the IBM i operating system. Its most recent version, RPG IV, adds modernization features such as free-form syntax, moving the language beyond the strict column-based format of the original.
