Io (programming language)

Object-Oriented Language

Io is a small, prototype-based, object-oriented programming language created by Steve Dekorte around 2002, in which every value is an object and new objects are created by cloning an existing prototype object rather than instantiating a class, a design directly inspired by the earlier languages Self and Smalltalk. Io features homoiconic, message-passing syntax in which even control structures such as if statements are ordinary messages sent to objects, along with built-in support for actor-based concurrency, coroutines and differential inheritance for memory-efficient object cloning.

FAQs

Which earlier languages shaped the design of Io?

According to the Io language website: "Io is a dynamic, prototype-based language built on a few simple ideas taken from Smalltalk (all values are objects), Self (prototypes, not classes), NewtonScript (differential inheritance), Act1 (actors and futures for concurrency), Lisp (code is a runtime-inspectable message tree), and Lua (small and embeddable)."

Does Io use operating system threads for concurrency?

According to the Io language website: "Concurrency uses cooperative user-level coroutines rather than OS threads, scaling to thousands of active tasks without thread-level overhead."
