Ren'Py is an open source programming language and engine created in 2004 for making visual novels, a form of computer-mediated storytelling. Its name is a portmanteau of ren'ai, the Japanese word for romantic love, which is a common element of games made with it, and Python, the language the engine runs on. The Programming Language Database notes that over 1000 games use the engine, nearly all of them in English, and that at least 3,124 repositories on GitHub use it. Its early development happened under the renpy organization on GitHub. The demo script shown on the page gives the flavor of the language: an init block sets screen size and window title, image statements declare backgrounds and character pictures, a Character object lets a speaker's name and colour be set once, and a label start marks where the game begins. Lines beginning with a hash are comments, and PLDB lists Python and Cython among its related languages.
