MNOS, whose name expands from the Russian for Portable Operating System, is a Unix-like operating system developed in the Soviet Union, derived from Version 6 Unix with features drawn from Berkeley Software Distribution Unix. Development began in 1981 at IPK Minavtoproma in Moscow, later joined by other institutes including the Kurchatov Institute, and the system was popular in the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc from 1983 to 1986 for its small size and speed. It was notably the first fully bilingual version of Unix, using a proprietary 8-bit Cyrillic character set called U-code, and between 1986 and 1990 it was gradually merged with DEMOS 1.x to form DEMOS 2.x.
