OpenStack

Network and Internet Systems

OpenStack is a free, open-standard cloud computing platform, mostly deployed as infrastructure-as-a-service in public and private clouds where it makes virtual servers, storage and networking available to users on demand. NASA and the web-hosting company Rackspace launched the project in 2010, combining NASA's Nebula compute platform with Rackspace's Cloud Files storage platform, and the OpenStack Foundation was later formed to govern its development. OpenStack became a widely used foundation for organizations building their own private cloud infrastructure rather than relying entirely on a public provider such as AWS or Azure. FAQs

Did NASA stay involved with OpenStack after launching it?

NASA stopped contributing actively in 2012 but kept using OpenStack for its own private cloud.

NASA and Rackspace Hosting announced OpenStack in July 2010. In 2012 NASA withdrew as an active contributor and chose Amazon Web Services for its cloud-based services. A July 2013 internal NASA audit cited a lack of technical progress and other factors as the reason, though part of that report was contradicted by remarks from the Ames Research Center CIO. NASA did continue to use OpenStack itself: as of November 2021 it ran a private cloud called Explore on OpenStack in support of its Discover supercomputer cluster.
