OpenStack is a free, open-standard cloud computing platform, mostly deployed as infrastructure-as-a-service in public and private clouds where it makes virtual servers, storage and networking available to users on demand. NASA and the web-hosting company Rackspace launched the project in 2010, combining NASA's Nebula compute platform with Rackspace's Cloud Files storage platform, and the OpenStack Foundation was later formed to govern its development. OpenStack became a widely used foundation for organizations building their own private cloud infrastructure rather than relying entirely on a public provider such as AWS or Azure.
